NOx Sensor Fault? Fixed on Your Driveway, Same Day

A failing NOx sensor is one of the most common causes of an AdBlue warning light, SCR fault, limp mode, or an “engine will not restart” countdown, and one of the most misdiagnosed. We run a live diagnostic before touching anything, then bypass, delete or remove the faulty sensor on-site. London and the M25, six days a week.

NOx Sensor Bypass

An emulator reports a healthy, in-spec NOx sensor reading to the ECU without physically removing or deleting anything. Fully reversible, and the quickest way to stop a false-reading sensor triggering AdBlue or SCR warnings while the rest of the vehicle stays standard. The most common choice for daily-driven vans and cars.

NOx Sensor Delete

Removes the sensor from the ECU's expected inputs at software level and re-flashes accordingly, so a failed upstream or downstream sensor no longer throws fault codes or forces limp mode. Suited to vehicles where replacing the physical NOx sensor repeatedly hasn't solved the problem, or where the vehicle's being taken off standard emissions compliance.

NOx Sensor Remova

Physically takes the faulty NOx sensor or sensors out of the exhaust system and closes off the software side to match. Typically chosen for HGVs, plant or export vehicles where the sensor no longer needs to serve any purpose.

AdBlue Bypass

Emulator-based, fully reversible. Reads normal AdBlue levels without permanently altering software. Preferred by London fleets needing a fast, low-commitment fix.

Full AdBlue Service Callout Includes

What Is a NOx Sensor, and Why Do They Fail So Often?

01

Upstream Sensor

Measures raw NOx levels straight from the engine, before the AdBlue catalyst.

02

Downstream Sensor

Checks how much NOx remains after AdBlue dosing, confirming the SCR system’s actually working.

03

Where They Sit

One of the harshest spots on the vehicle, constant heat, moisture, exhaust gases and AdBlue crystallisation.

04

Why They Drift

Sensor elements degrade over time. Once readings fall outside the ECU’s expected range, it logs a fault and can trigger limp mode.

05

Typical Lifespan

Often straightforward wear at 80,000 to 120,000 miles. Earlier failure usually points to a bigger issue, water ingress, injector fouling, or misfire.

06

Why It Gets Misdiagnosed

A drifting sensor and a genuine AdBlue dosing fault trigger near-identical warning lights, so a healthy sensor sometimes gets replaced unnecessarily.

Benefits

Why Choose Our Mobile NOx Sensor Service

Correct Diagnosis First

We don't replace parts on a hunch. Live sensor data tells us whether it's the sensor, the wiring, or something else in the SCR system entirely.

No More False Warnings

Once fixed properly, the same AdBlue or NOx fault doesn't reappear two weeks later.

Lifetime Warranty

Software work is warrantied for as long as you own the vehicle.

Same-Day, On-Site

Most NOx sensor jobs are done in under 2 hours, wherever your vehicle's parked.

Signs you need this service

Signs of a Failing NOx Sensor

NOx sensor faults rarely announce themselves clearly. They usually show up disguised as a general AdBlue or SCR warning, which is part of why they get misread so often. The giveaway pattern is a warning light that clears after a reset but returns within days, sometimes tied to how hot the engine’s running, since a marginal sensor can behave differently cold compared to fully warmed through. If a sensor’s already been replaced once and the same fault comes straight back, that’s often a sign the original diagnosis was wrong, or a second sensor’s now failing too.

AdBlue or SCR warning light that clears then returns within days

Warning light behaviour changes between cold start and warmed-up running

Fault code for NOx sensor circuit or signal out of range

New sensor fitted, same fault returns within a week or two

Reduced power or hesitation under load with no other obvious cause

"Engine will not restart" countdown message on the dash

NOx Sensor Questions, Answered Honestly

NOx sensor faults are one of the most common jobs we're called out for. Here's what customers actually ask us before booking real questions, straight answers.

A NOx sensor fault usually shows up as an engine management or AdBlue warning light, sometimes with a message about emissions or "reduced engine power," and a stored code like P229F, P2200, P220A/P220B or similar in the 22xx–24xx range depending on the make. On its own that doesn't confirm the sensor is actually bad a wiring fault, a dosing pump issue or even a genuinely high NOx output from the engine can trigger the same code. We plug in and check live sensor readings against expected values before condemning the part, so you're not paying to swap a sensor that was never faulty.
Most SCR-equipped diesels have two: one before the SCR catalyst (measuring NOx going in) and one after it (checking the catalyst is doing its job). They fail independently, so no we only replace the one that's actually reading incorrectly. Fitting the second "just in case" is unnecessary cost unless our diagnosis shows both are out of range, which does happen but isn't the norm.
Occasionally a sensor reading incorrectly because of soot build-up or a coating from poor-quality AdBlue can be cleaned and will read normally afterwards we do check for this since it's the cheaper outcome. But a NOx sensor is a precision electrochemical device, and once the internal ceramic element or heater circuit has actually failed, cleaning won't fix it and replacement is the only real option. We'll tell you honestly which situation you're in rather than trying a clean when a sensor is clearly dead.
Short term, yes, in most cases the engine itself isn't in danger. But the ECU relies on the NOx sensor to control AdBlue dosing correctly, so a false reading often triggers reduced power, a limp mode countdown, or excess/insufficient AdBlue dosing that can affect the SCR catalyst over time. Left long enough, some vehicles will restrict starts until it's fixed. We'd recommend getting it diagnosed promptly rather than waiting for it to escalate into a full lockout.
It depends on the vehicle and which sensor (pre- or post-catalyst) needs replacing access on some HGVs and vans takes longer than on a typical car. We diagnose first, confirm exactly which sensor has failed, then give you a fixed price in writing before starting. Most car and van jobs are completed in one mobile visit; we'll give you a time estimate once we know which sensor is affected and how accessible it is.
On many vehicles a straight like-for-like sensor swap is plug-and-play, but a number of makes (several Mercedes, VAG, and HGV platforms in particular) require the new sensor to be coded, taught, or have an adaptation reset carried out through diagnostics before it reads correctly and clears the fault properly. Our mobile units carry the diagnostic equipment to do this as part of the job, so it's included we don't leave you with a part fitted but not properly recognised by the ECU.
Yes a stored emissions-related fault code or an illuminated warning light tied to the SCR/NOx system is a recognised MOT fail point under the current testing rules, and a malfunctioning sensor can also push actual tailpipe NOx readings out of range on the emissions test itself. Replacing the faulty sensor and clearing the code properly is what gets the vehicle through.
Repeat failures are usually down to one of a few things: low-quality or diluted AdBlue coating the sensor over time, a connector or wiring fault causing intermittent readings rather than the sensor itself, exhaust leaks upstream affecting the exhaust gas the sensor is measuring, or a genuine SCR catalyst problem making the post-sensor reading look like a sensor fault when it isn't. If you've had more than one NOx sensor fail on the same vehicle, it's worth having the wider system checked rather than just replacing the part again.
We fit genuine or OEM-equivalent sensors matched to your vehicle's make and model not generic aftermarket parts that may not calibrate correctly or last as long. The specific brand depends on what your vehicle uses (Bosch, Continental, NGK/NTK and Delphi are common), and we'll confirm the part being fitted as part of your written quote.
Yes we're fully mobile across London and the M25 area, six days a week. Our vans carry the diagnostic equipment needed to identify the fault, the sensor stock for common makes, and the tools to do any post-fit coding on-site, so in most cases the whole job diagnosis, replacement and reset is done in a single visit wherever your vehicle is parked.
